4 Reasons to Consider a Career in Radiology

Career in Radiology

Radiology is one of the fastest growing fields in the health sector today. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the field had created 230,600 jobs in 2014, and was growing at a rate of 9 per cent a year. The bureau predicts that this growth, which is higher than the average for all jobs, will remain constant for the next 10 years.

This prediction comes as good news for people working in the field or wishing to join it. Of late, radiologists have been fearful about compensation and loss of prestige. Jonathan Berlin, professor of radiology at NorthShore University HealthSystem, views these challenges with optimism. To him, each problem has a silver lining. There are still many reasons to consider a career in Radiology.

1. A Good Salary

The first reason why you should pursue an online radiologic sciences degree to become a radiologist is the pay. After graduation, expect to earn an average salary of $58,120 per year. The BLS has listed this as the median pay for both radiologic and MRI technologists. When taken individually, the figures for the two specializations differ slightly.

As a radiologic technologist, the average salary is around $56,670 a year. It rises to $81,660 if you are in the top 10 per cent. But as an MRI technologist, you take home $67,720 or $94,550 when you get to the top 10 per cent.

2. It is a Challenging Career

Nothing about radiology is boring. It is known for being one of the most challenging and diverse medical fields. You have to read films and diagnose diseases. On top of that, you must have an intimate knowledge of the human body to do this effectively.

In addition, because radiology is a fast growing field, chances are that demand will increase with time. Although universities like ADU Online are producing young professionals with bachelors in radiologic sciences degrees every year, they cannot do so fast enough. Until they do, demand in the sector should remain very high.

3. You Work With and Learn From Many Medical Professionals

Radiology is unique because radiologists work with nearly all medical professionals. All fields of medicine at some point need to use imaging techniques to diagnose diseases. For this reason, radiologists learn a bit about every field. It is a necessary part of their job. Few medical professions offer the same degree of interaction and diversity that radiology does.

4. You Work With Patients

This is perhaps the best part about being a radiologist. You not only work with patients, but also make a difference in their lives. Every film you analyze, and every disease or condition you diagnose, changes someone’s life for the better. Simply put, radiology is a fulfilling career.
There are many reasons why you should consider a career in radiology. It has a growth rate that is higher than the average for all occupations and radiologists earn a good salary. The top 10 per cent earn more than $80,000 dollars. Finally, it allows you to impact the lives of your patients.
