The Olympic Stadium in Rio de Janeiro roared with applause as Algeria’s defending champion Taoufik Makhloufi made way to the semi-finals after bagging silver in the 800m. Makhloufi, who came in second in the 800m behind David Rudisha, timed 3 min 47.07sec to win his heat.
On the other hand, world record-holder David Rudisha retained his Olympic 800m title with a devastating final lap sprint while American Clayton Murphy grabbed a bronze.
Taoufik Makhloufi won the first Algerian medal at the 2016 Olympic Games and adds a second Olympic medal to his list of medals after the gold medal of the 1500m won at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.
Way to go champ! Three cheers for Makhloufi. Hip! Hip! Hurray!
