Everyone, including me, thought Justin Bieber had it made as the Best New Artist at the 53rd Grammy Awards. But surprise of all surprises, Esperanza Spalding was pronounced as this yearís Best New Artist! So who is she that she was able to steal Justinís thunder?
First of all, Esperanza is not into the same genre as Justin; she is into jazz! Itís quite unusual for a jazz artist to win Best New artist at the Grammyís, so this is quite a feat for her.
The 26-year-old is primarily a jazz bassist. She learned music and instruments as early as 5 years old! She first dabbled with violin then proceeded to learning the guitar, oboe, and cello and then she fell in love with the bass when she was in high school.
Because of scholarships, Esperanza was able to study at the Portland State University and the prestigious Berklee College of Music. After graduating from Berklee, the school hired her to be an instructor.
Her passion in jazz enabled her to come up with three albums namely Junjo which was released in 2006, Esperanza in 2008, and Chamber Music Society in 2010. Aside from her own albums, Esperanza has collaborated with various famous artists including Fourplay, Christian Scott, and Stanley Clark.
This is just an overview about Esperanza Spalding. With this we now know that she is not a total newcomer in the music industry and that she is also a very talented and dedicated artist who deserves this yearís Best New Artist at the Grammys.
