India, a democratic nation permits its citizens the freedom of speech. Freedom for anything is good if used accurately. Recently, Bollywood Megastar Aamir Khan joined the uproar against intolerance. While speaking at the Ramnath Goenka Excellence in Journalism Awards, Aamir stated that he was alarmed by the number of threatening incidences that showcased in the news every day. He further added that his wife Kiran Rao even suggested that they should probably leave the country.
The actor, who is a Muslim and married to a Hindu, made the comments in response to questions about a recent decision made by a set of individuals on returning their national awards in protest to rising intolerance. Surprising as it sounds, we wonder what instilled Aamir to talk about this in public. Isn’t this the same nation that has made him an iconic star? While threat is a common phenomenon experienced by both the rich and the poor, it’s the right usage of words that can get your message conveyed appropriately.
Having said that, wasn’t it just an opinion that an Indian was expressing at a public gathering. As a nation that permits free expression, why is there an outcry for expressing an opinion? But as they say, certain things don’t change. Only if each of us behaved and acted responsibly, peace would prevail without having to live in fear!
